Candlelighting Continues Upper School Tradition of Passing the Flame of Leadership

The Class of 2021 symbolically passed the flame of leadership to the Class of 2022 during the annual ceremony.
St. Margaret’s seniors and juniors continued one of the school’s most cherished traditions this week, as the Class of 2021 symbolically passed the flame of leadership to the Class of 2022 during the annual Candlelighting ceremony.

This year’s event took place in Hurlbut Theater to safely accommodate the number of students participating. Despite the change of venue, the traditions of the beloved and beautiful event continued as always. Each member of the senior class “lit” an electric candle of a junior class member inside the dark theater, beginning with outgoing ASB president Logan Wojcik and incoming ASB president Katherine Cruse. The candles symbolized the passing of leadership, as the tradition takes place during the senior class’ final days on campus.

“This year, more than ever, this passing of light amidst darkness is both poignant and apt,” Upper School Prinicpal Jeneen Graham said. “Our school leaders are tasked with the responsibility of leading, regardless of the environment and the circumstances.  Never before has a class endured this level of uncertainty and they met this unique environment with creativity, hopefulness and resilience.  The members of the Class of 2021 have shown that they truly understand the responsibility of leadership and have been a bright and shining light for all of us during this challenging time.”

“The class of 2022 has been by our class’ side for almost as long as we can remember, and I can guarantee you that each and every senior recognizes the talent and grace the class of 2022 possesses,” Logan said. “As our class of graduating seniors lights your candles today, I want you all to know how happy we are that we get to leave the school in your hands. The traditions, experiences, and bonds that have been created this year in the Upper School have been unmatched from years past, in the best and most unique way possible. I challenge you all to thrive and bring out joy in one another as you step into leaders on campus next year. I want you all to know that you are loved, deserving, and ready to tackle a hopefully more predictable year.”

After all the candles were lit and the light flicked all around Hurlbut Theather, senior Sarah Pence sang the traditional piece “Go Light Your World” to her fellow students.

“While the class of 2022 will receive the flame of leadership, the classes of 2023 and 2024 join them in the responsibility to lead next year,” Dr. Graham said. “For all of you, classes of 2022, 2023 and 2024, today is the day when you accept the responsibility to look out for the incoming class of 2025 and for all those who are younger than you.”
