PHOTOS: Middle School Play ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Brings Classic Science-Fiction Story to Life

The students performed four live shows outdoors at Nolet Amphitheater, which presented new learning opportunities.
St. Margaret’s Middle School students told the complex science-fiction story A Wrinkle in Time on the stage, performing four live shows outdoors at Nolet Amphitheater.

The 27 Middle School students (click here to view the program) shared the story of Meg, a young teen who goes on a mission to rescue her father, traveling through time and space in an exciting adventure filled with themes of individuality, friendship and courage. The cast included three concurrent learners who played “IT” and the two “IT Guards” from their homes.

In addition to the performers, many other Middle School students contributed to making the show a success, including grade 7 student Gavin Shams as stage manager, as well as contributions from the Middle School theater technical arts class taught by Gordon Richins.

The outdoor setting of A Wrinkle in Time presented new learning opportunities for the performers, according to theater teacher Daniel Pacheco, who directed the show alongside assistant director Cori Samskey.

“They learned about the elements and structure of Greek theatre and the importance of a Greek chorus in this type of outdoor storytelling,” Mr. Pacheco said. “They worked on projecting their voices, which is a challenge in a large space while masked.”

According to Ms. Samskey, “The use of the drums was a wonderful tool. The actors felt connected and built a sense of unity and teamwork throughout the entire process - being a part of something bigger than themselves.” She also said that it was incredible to have costume designer Linda Vick back for the first time this academic year.

In addition to the live shows, viewers could watch a stream of the show, filmed and edited by PAC Production Assistant Spencer Keane.
