Grade 7 Students Explore Arts of Ancient China in Virtual Field Trip to Bowers Museum

The virtual field trip furthered their studies on the arts of ancient China.
St. Margaret’s grade 7 world history students took part in a virtual field trip to the Bowers Museum last week, furthering their studies on the arts of ancient China.

Bowers has a Silk Road exhibit, and through the virtual field trip, the Middle School students took part in a docent-led tour, which culminated the class’s unit on ancient China.

“We have been focusing on trade as a major theme across all of our units this year. In particular, we have been learning about the exchange and interaction between East and West during the Middle Ages because of increased use of the Silk Road trade routes and the Indian Ocean trade routes,” Middle School history teacher Katie Harris said. “This field trip touched upon multiple points we have focused on this year in a number of our units, in particular our Ancient Rome, golden age of Islam, and Chinese dynasties units.”

After the docent-led tour, grade 7 students created Chinese scrolls inspired by what they learned on the Bowers tour.

Grade 7 world history and geography examines the rise and fall of empires, the diffusion of religions and languages, and the movement of people, ideas and products—examining the ways in which increasing connections across regions and people helped shape the early-modern world.
