Big Weekend for Tartan Athletics

St. Margaret's made some noise around the county to close out a busy week.
Boys Basketball
 
St. Margaret's took on rival Sage Hill School on the road Friday evening and came away with a 61-43 win over the Lightning. Avenging an early season 76-72 double-OT loss, the Tartans were led by Russell Frye (16 pts.), Charlie Wohlgemuth (11 pts.) and Dylan Cormac (10 pts.).
 
"It was a great night for us on the road at Sage," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "Being able to bounce back from the double-OT loss to them earlier in the year demonstrated the character of our team."
 
The Tartans will next travel to face Pacifica Christian on Monday, April 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
Girls Basketball
 
The Tartans walked off the court a winner Friday evening on a Mary Smith buzzer-beater, downing Mission Viejo 39-38. Tiana Pavia set up the pass that led to Smith's game-winner. Alice Korolev (12 pts.) and Mandy Taylor (11 pts.) kept pace for St. Margaret's.
 
The Tartans will take on CVCS on the road on Monday, April 26, at 6 p.m.
 
Boys Lacrosse
 
The Tartans delivered a big win Friday evening, downing a talented Corona del Mar squad 9-8 in an overtime thriller. Owen Binder (2g) slotted the game-winner on an assist by Matt Groeninger (3g, 2a) with 2:22 left to play in the overtime period in the match-up between two top 10 ranked teams.
 
Will Stahl had himself a game with four goals and one assist, forcing the game into overtime with 1:21 left in regulation. Riley Chester added a crucial goal to tie it at seven goals apiece in the fourth quarter.
 
Goaltender Sebastian Chicas recorded 11 saves in the win.
 
"What an exciting win over a talented and well-coached CDM squad. I was so proud of our guys for how they stuck together and stayed resilient in a hard-fought game where they found themselves tied or down a goal for much of the contest," said head coach Brian Kelly. " Late in the 4th quarter and overtime, our guys just made winning plays in between the lines and on both ends of the field."
 
Swimming & Diving
 
The Tartan girls picked up a 92-50 win against Sage Hill School Friday afternoon.
 
Zoe Reynolds qualified for another CIF consideration time in her 200 free and won the event, followed by Rainbow Li touching in second. Claire Kim broke the challenging 30-second barrier in the 50 yard Free with a great race and then followed it with a great swim directly after in the 100 fly. Heidi Tufo won the 100 fly with a time of 1:07.09. Captains Justina Brandt and CeCe Xu led the team in spirit and fast racing in the 200 medley relay, 100 fly and 100 breaststroke, earning best times. Rainbow Li won swimmer of the meet for her outstanding contributions to the team in the water and with her consistent positive team spirit on the deck.
 
For the Varsity boys, Daneel Polakoff swam his best time in the 200 IM and crushed the CIF consideration time, with a 2:06.50. Team captain Charlie Whiting swam his best time in the 100 breaststroke and dropped a second from last week. Matthew Farhadian, Levon Alyanakian and Alejandro Turnbull joined Charlie Whiting and Daniel Polakoff in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, which were improved times from last week. Charlie Whiting earned swimmer of the meet for his outstanding contributions to the team with his leadership on the deck and fast swimming in the pool.
 
The Tartans compete against The Webb School on Thursday, April 29, in the final league dual meet.
 
Boys Soccer
 
St. Margaret's downed visiting Avalon High School 9-0 on Tartan Field Saturday Afternoon. Relying on solid possession and generating numerous scoring opportunities, The Tartans dominated the pitch all afternoon.
 
St. Margaret's was led by Matt Groeninger (2g, 1a) and Marcelo Cruz-Sanchez (2g, 1a), while Hayden Mann (2g) and Hugh Eaton (1g, 2a) both turned in good games for the Tartans.
 
St. Margaret's will next take on The Webb School on Tartan Field Monday, April 26 at 6 p.m.
