Upper School Celebrates Pride Week Through Educational Panels and Fundraisers

St. Margaret’s Upper School recognized Pride Week this week through fundraising, educational panels and participation in an opt-in National Day of Silence.
Through a variety of activities meant to educate, build empathy and raise funds for an organization that helps LGBTQ+ youth, St. Margaret’s Upper School recognized Pride Week this week through fundraising, educational panels and participation in an opt-in National Day of Silence.

The week was made possible by the Upper School’s LGBTQ+ Club, which worked in partnership with the professional community’s LBGTQ+ affinity group and Equity Team’s LGBTQ+ Advocacy Committee to bring Pride Week to St. Margaret’s.

One of the highlights of the week was a panel that took place during Upper School Convo, featuring adult members of the professional community and Upper School students who shared their stories and offered ideas for promoting inclusion on campus.

“My classmates and I walked away from the panel having great respect for the panelists and developed a deeper understanding of personal struggles that many of us may never experience,” said senior Olivia Young, vice-president of the Upper School’s LGBTQ+ club. “Additionally we developed an understanding on the importance of ally ship and how we can always listen, listen, listen, to learn and grow. Talking to your peers about personal struggles is very challenging and I find it extremely admirable that they were able to speak up there with such confidence and composure.”

The LGBTQ+ Club, which meets regularly with about 30 Upper School student members and allies, also organized a fundraiser selling buttons to raise money for an organization that advocates for LGBTQ+ youth.

Pride Week wrapped up today with the annual Day of Silence. Students had the choice to take part in a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ+ students and allies take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ+ people in schools.

Bryce Chan, founder and president of the LGBTQ+ club, said the week was a success and the feedback from peers has been highly positive.

“It is not an understatement when I say that Upper School is truly an ally,” Bryce said. “I am so incredibly grateful for this community and their dedication to making this a safe space.”
