PHOTOS: Grade 2 Study of Johnny Appleseed Leads to Fun Engineering Challenge

Students in grade 2 have learned about the life and legend of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, in a social studies unit. Students explored the impact Johnny Appleseed had on American life and its westward expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries through his planting of apple trees.

That led to an engineering challenge inspired by Johnny Appleseed’s passion. Students were given dozens of toothpicks and an apple cut up into several pieces.

“The students were challenged to put the apple back together using toothpicks,” Lower School teacher Erin Moore said.

Check out the photo gallery for a look at how the favorite fruit of Johnny Appleseed became an all-natural puzzle for grade 2 Tartans!
