Lower School Virtual BOB Tournament Turns Reading Into a Fun Competition

St. Margaret’s played host to this year’s South Orange County Battle of the Books tournament last week, with 20 Lower School Tartans competing against teams from eight other schools in a virtual format.
Battle of the Books is a competition featuring head-to-head matchups with teams answering questions regarding details from books on a 20-title reading list, adding a competitive aspect to reading. Teams received points for answering with the correct book title and correct author.
St. Margaret’s had three teams of grade 4 and grade 5 students compete. They first received the BOB reading list at the end of last school year, and have met virtually each Wednesday after school to discuss the books and prepare for competition. The teams are coached by Lower School teacher Colleen Beshk and Library teacher Darla Magana, who also serves as league coordinator.
St. Margaret’s has hosted the South Orange County BOB Tournament for many years, and this year’s tournament featured 20 teams from nine school, including Tarbut v’Torah, Mission Basilica, St. Edward, St. Anne, Junipero Serra, Mission Viejo Christian, Oxford Prep and Olivewood.
