PHOTOS: Class of 2021 Enjoys Surprise ‘Camp on Campus’ Senior Retreat

St. Margaret’s Class of 2021 was given a special surprise recently, as the Upper School arranged a “Camp on Campus” daylong senior retreat in lieu of a normal day of classes.

The Upper School collaborated with Camp Stevens, where the annual senior retreat typically is held in August, to instead bring the experience to St. Margaret’s campus. In a day of activities that highlight relevant life skills, including resilience, problem-solving, integrity and communication, St. Margaret’s seniors unplugged and reflected with their classmates in a fun and fulfilling day of activities run by Camp Stevens counselors.

The seniors were not aware of the Monday retreat until the Friday before, when it was revealed during a scavenger hunt in each Advisory. The Upper School leadership worked behind the scenes with teachers and coaches to make sure the Class of 2021 had a day free of other commitments, and activities started with students watching the sun rise over the St. Margaret’s campus, and finished after sunset. The day included a collaborative creation of a banner, games such as dodgeball, team-building activities, and finished with a bonfire and live music on Chalmers Field.

“Retreats are a cherished part of the student experience, and it was important to us that the Class of 2021 was able to have its senior retreat while still adhering to our health and safety guidelines,” Upper School Director of Community Life Lora Allison said. “It was a great success. Camp Stevens was an incredible partner in putting together programming and working within school guidelines, and the students had a wonderful time. They customized a joyful, thoughtful experience for our seniors. The day encompassed all that we hoped it would, and more.”

Grade-level retreats normally take place for students grades 5-12 and are a highly anticipated part of the student experience, creating a fun, safe and rewarding passage for each class to come together. While retreats typically take place at on-site locations such as Camp Stevens in Julian, this year’s senior retreat was able to fulfill the objectives of class cohesion, team building, personal challenge and reflection in a fun and meaningful way.
