Tartan Track & Field Athletes Thrilled to Return to Competition

Track & Field was back at it while boys basketball, boys soccer and surf programs took home wins this weekend.
Track & Field

After a year and three weeks since its last competition, St. Margaret's track and field team finally got a chance to go out and compete again. The Tartans were hosted by JSerra Catholic High School this past Friday evening, which proved to be a great start to the season.

Besting last season's mark, the Tartan 4x100m relay team of Molly Green, Sophia Karahalios, Malia Todd and Makenna Lizarde turned in a solid 52.21 opening mark. Long-jumpers Luci Hill and Brady Moseley had a fantastic evening, notching jumps of 15 ft. and 14.3 3/4 ft., respectively. In the 100m, Makenna Lizarde led the Tartans with a personal best time of 13.35. Lizarde also helped St. Margaret's close the event with a dominant 2:05.38 team win in the sprint medley race alongside teammates Malia Todd, Sophia Karahalios and Annabel Thiel.

“Words cannot describe how proud and grateful I am of this team for their hard work and dedication to not just the program but to one another," said head coach Edgar Vazquez. "The best part about this was seeing a group of kids smile with each other as they competed their hearts out!"

Boys Basketball

The Tartans returned to the hardwood for the first time this year, downing Acaciawood Academy 86-32 in non-league action in Pasternack Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

St. Margaret's turned in a solid team win, with Dylan Cormac, Sam Dunnell, Russell Frye, Cody Kim and Charlie Wohlgemuth all recording double figure outings.

"Obviously, the team was happy with the outcome of game one, but in this year, the victory was in the ability to actually play a game," said head coach Chris Nordstrom.

The Tartans next face Whittier Christian in Pasternack Fieldhouse on March 31 at 6 p.m.

Surf

The Tartan surf program picked up a 48.5 - 43.5 win against Capistrano Valley Christian School at the San Clemente Pier on Sunday.

St. Margaret's was led by Michael Cuda's first-place finish in the longboard division and a shortboard heat victory to advance the Tartans on the scoresheet. Charlie Denham recorded a fourth-place finish in the shortboard division and added valuable points with a second-place bodyboarding division finish. Benton Barlow and Tyler Mears advanced to the longboard division finals to help the Tartans. Jonah Mackenzie also turned in a great performance during his shortboard division heats.

Heidi Tufo and Kate Cruse performed well in the girls longboard division, while Minka Martinez, Audrey Weiss, Eli Bernstein, Blake Scheel and John Ullem also battled through some high tide conditions on their shortboards. The hard-fought win capped an exciting season for the Tartan Surfers.
Boys Soccer
The Tartans traveled across the channel to defeat hosts Avalon High School 4-1 on Saturday. St. Margaret's countered Avalon's physical play with keen possession pace setting the entire match.
St. Margaret's received goals from Peter Mack, Hayden Mann, Josh Kim and Hugh Eaton.
The Tartans will face Samueli Academy on April 12 on Tartan Field at 6 p.m.
