St. Margaret's Athletic Programs Pick Up Early-Season Victories

The Tartans girls basketball, boys lacrosse, baseball and boys tennis programs all notched wins this week.
Girls Basketball
 
St. Margaret's girls basketball program opened the 2021 season with a 37-35 win over hosts Laguna Beach High School. In only the second girls basketball contest in Orange County since the CIF athletics restart, the Tartans and Breakers played an even match for two quarters before the Tartans took over in the second half.
 
The Tartans were led by senior forward Alice Korolev and junior center Mandy Taylor, each contributing 13 points in the win.
 
"It was so great for the girls to return to competition. We are so proud of how they competed and prevailed against the Breakers," said coach Jonathan Tufo. "The girls are improving every day, and we look forward to their growth this season."
 
The Tartans will tip-off against Calvary Chapel Santa Ana at home on March 30 at 6:30 p.m.
 
Boys Lacrosse
 
St. Margaret's matched up against Orange Lutheran for a convincing  17-3 win over the visiting Lancers in boys lacrosse.
 
The Tartans were led by Matt Groeninger (2g, 2a) and Seth Forstot (3g, 1a), while Owen Binder, Makai Todd and Tyler Matthews each had 2 goals.
 
Bobby Springer led the first half face-off duties, going 12/13 and recording two assists. Netminder Sebastian Chicas notched a clean sheet in the first half, keeping the Tartans in front.
 
"It was awesome to see the guys back on the field together for the first time in over a year. We really challenged the guys to get off to a fast start, and they responded with an absolutely dominant first quarter," said head coach Brian Kelly. "I'm proud of their effort, and I was excited for all the younger players who were able to get some significant game experience."
 
St. Margaret's draws Mater Dei on Saturday, March 27, on Tartan Field at 2 p.m.
 
Baseball
 
The Tartans opened the 2021 season with an 11-9 road win over Orange High School. Sophomore Andrew Miehe crushed a home run to center while picking up an RBI and a double. Miehe also pitched four innings giving up two earned runs. Senior Trey Pate went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI's.
 
The Tartans will return to the diamond on March 30, squaring off against host The Webb Schools at 3:15 p.m.
 
Boys Tennis
 
St. Margaret's sunk Fairmont 16-2 in action at Newport Beach Country Club this past Monday.
 
The Tartans match up against Laguna Beach on the road on Wednesday, March 24.
