St. Margaret's football program returned to action in a 35-16 loss to the Eagles.
The Tartans jumped out to a 16-0 lead at the half, facing off against Estancia High School to mark a quick start to the 2021 spring football season. It was all Derek Smith in the first half for the Tartans, returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown to propel the Tartans to an early lead.
The Estancia Eagles came roaring back in the second half, scoring 35 unanswered points to earn the 35-16 victory.
St. Margaret's was led offensively by Derek Smith, who produced all of the Tartans' scoring as well as five catches for 36 yards. Dylan Lam contributed 23 yards rushing behind the quarterback play of Jack Ruff (10/24 56 yards passing, 29 yards rushing).
Defensively, Nick Ostlund had a sack and caused a fumble while posting three tackles and six assists. Conor Eiserman (one tackle, three assists), Battle Gideons (two tackles, six assists) Trey Kingsley (five assists), and Derek Smith (one int, two tackles, three assists) rounded out the defensive effort for the Tartans.
Commenting on the return to play on the gridiron, Head Coach Kory Minor was excited for the Tartans to get another chance to play football: "It was a great opportunity to see young men get back on the field with everything that is going on in our country. It was a beautiful sight".
The Tartans will return to Tartan Field to celebrate "senior night" and match up against Rancho Christian at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 26.
