St. Margaret’s TIDE Leadership Group Leads Black History Month Celebration

The activities included a panel discussion with Upper School senior Kaelyn Dunnell and head football coach Kory Minor, moderated by Director of Equity and Inclusion Victor Cota.
St. Margaret’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education student leadership group led a variety of educational touchpoints to celebrate Black History Month in February.

Among the highlights was a panel discussion for Upper School and Middle School students with Upper School senior Kaelyn Dunnell and head football coach Kory Minor, moderated by Director of Equity and Inclusion Victor Cota.

“Black History Month means a lot to me,” Kaelyn said. “It’s a time to learn about how Black people and Black creators have been instrumental to American culture. It’s also a time of intense pride. It’s so great to see Black people uplifted by each other and by allies. It makes me really proud to be a part of the Black community.”

Their discussion touched on a variety of topics, from the Black experience in the United States, to inspirational Black creators, to advice for fellow Tartans on how to be better allies for Black people.

“I think there’s an importance to creating friendship and connections with people who don't look like you, if you want to move this world to a better place and in a better light,” Mr. Minor said. “We talk all the time about love and respect, but you have to be able to connect. This young man or young woman doesn't look like me, we have no commonalities, their hair is different than my hair, their upbringing is different from my upbringing. But I'm going take this barrier down. I'm going to connect …  if we can do that on a minute scale, then a massive scale, I think we can solve many problems and issues that we have in the world.”

TIDE started the month with an opening session on Black History Month in the Upper School, where they spoke about its history and importance. Later, they showed a video featuring Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy, and also hosted a TIDETalk around Black History Month. TIDEtalks are student-led roundtable-style discussions where groups of 8-10 students gather to discuss a given topic.
