Lower School Families Create, Engineer and Learn As Part of Virtual Family STEAM Night

The 10th annual Family STEAM Night was an innovative virtual pivot from the traditional and popular in-person annual event celebrating STEAM programs and projects in St. Margaret's Lower School.

With age-appropriate do-it-yourself projects, engineering challenges and how-to content teaching new creative skills, Lower School families are taking part in a virtual Family STEAM Night, an innovative virtual pivot from the traditional and popular in-person annual event.

St. Margaret’s Lower School STEAM teachers—science teacher David Beshk, ICE Lab teacher Laura Redman, art teacher Mary Mayer and Director of Educational Technology and Library Angela Mackenzie—put together a creative and robust multimedia classroom using Bitmoji. The site has videos, PDFs and how-to instructions for family-friendly STEAM activities which reflect what Lower School students are learning about in their science, technology and art classes.

The activities included:
  • Grade-specific STEAM projects inspired by what students are learning in school. All of the projects used simple household materials and could be swapped out for similar materials. The projects included an at-home barometer, a planting machine, a wind turbine, a no-wire circuit and a water collection system.
  • Students were encouraged to take part in one of nine challenges organized by Mrs. Redman using LEGO bricks, including building a maze, building a birthday cake and building a volcano.
  • Students could learn how to finger-knit by watching a how-to video curated by Mrs. Mayer.
The site is live for families to participate at their convenience, and the virtual format of the hub allows students the chance to loop in grandparents and other family members remotely for educational family fun.

“We wanted this year’s Family STEAM Night to continue what the traditional in-person event accomplishes—providing families a chance to come together to learn and have fun doing activities in science, art and technology,” Mr. Beshk said.

Family STEAM Night is in its 10th year, and is a celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and math programs and projects in the Lower School. You can check out the Family STEAM Night Bitmoji classroom by clicking here.
