Tartan Surf Program Stoked to Get Back to Competition

The Tartans returned to the water and the Scholastic Surf Series this past weekend.
Since the middle of October, in the midst of a pandemic, the St. Margaret’s surf team has been quietly working away, surfing in all conditions, pushing their abilities every week. With the uncertainty of competition this season, St. Margaret's athletes have maintained a resilient and dedicated approach to their sport. Finding some normalcy out in the water and rejoicing with teammates, the Tartans are excited to compete once again.

This past Sunday, the city of Huntington Beach and Scholastic Surf Series hosted the first surf competition of the season for Orange County High School teams. The Tartans were keyed up to face Santa Margarita. With slight offshore winds, inconsistent 3-4 foot waves, the Tartans hit the water, ready to surf. An outstanding team effort and enthusiasm helped the Tartans to take the overall win against Santa Margarita 38-30.

Surfing with intensity and scratching for waves in some unusual conditions, freshman Charlie Denham pushed his way through the boys' shortboard finals and took an overall fourth-place finish. Michael Cuda showed his smooth style and flow in the longboard division, nabbing a fourth-place result. A key performance from freshman Tyler Mears, who made the finals in the longboard division, rounded out the day for the Tartans.

Leading the girls squad, Kate Cruse and Heidi Tufo charged their way through heats making the finals in their perspective divisions. Kate finished with a second-place showing in the shortboard, while Heidi grabbed third-place in the longboard. Emma Bernstein also surfed her longboard to the finals taking 4th place. Freshman Audrey Weiss strategized with the inconsistent surf and was able to grab an overall third-place in the shortboard division.

Congratulations to St. Margaret's surfers!
