Gratitude Bags Made by Grade 5 Students Recognize St. Margaret’s Behind-the-Scenes Heroes

Students in Erika Higgins' class gave gifts and wrote thank-you notes for St. Margaret's maintenance and custodial teams.
Students in Erika Higgins’ grade 5 class were busy making gratitude goody bags last week, filling them with treats with necessities and adding a hand-written thank you note.

The recipients? St. Margaret’s maintenance and custodial teams.

“We dug deep into understanding their roles and responsibilities, including the enormity of this campus, such as the number of bathrooms, sinks and classrooms,” Mrs. Higgins said. “We wanted the students to know just how massive the scope of their work is and to make sure they understood that their work allows us all to come to school each and every day. We want them to know that we see them and we wouldn’t be able to learn and grow without them!”

The gratitude bags had household items donated by grade 5 families, including hand sanitizer and moisturizer and facemasks. In addition to a Valentine’s Day-themed treat, each of the maintenance and custodial team members received a personalized thank-you card written by the grade 5 students. The bags were delivered to the teams on Friday.

The project was led by Lower School Director of Community Life Tupper Spring and the grade 5 teachers as part of a unit about identity, where students recognized their own identity as well as explore the identity of others.

“We know that our safe and beautiful environment would not be possible without these teams,” Mrs. Higgins said, “and we wanted to take a moment to show our appreciation.”
