The Upper School’s Model United Nations club hosted a virtual conference for AP human geography students on Saturday. The conference was fully student-led, run by sophomore club leaders Wyatt Fales, Eileen Sadati, David Jiang, and Sophia Karahalios, and was attended by more than 30 students in grade 10.

Students chose countries to represent in a mock meeting of the United Nations, and discussed solutions to the Syrian refugee crisis. Over the course of three hours, students spoke on the refugee crisis according to their represented country’s views, and worked together to form a resolution to propose to the chair, which passed 15-0.

“This was the first thing outside of school the MUN club had done in nearly a year and I was super happy with how it went,” said Wyatt Fales, one of the Secretary Generals of MUN.

The Model United Nations club normally has several conferences a year, where students have the opportunity to participate with students from other schools. The pandemic has had a heavy effect on MUN in the past year, as it has made it difficult for these conferences to continue.

“The awkwardness of doing a conference online was definitely there at times, but the participation of all delegates made the conference go more smoothly than we could’ve hoped for.” Wyatt said.
