Grade 3 Students Partner with FAM to Organize Donation Drive

The project was in line with the grade 3 service theme of hunger, and culminated with filling a SMES van with needed items and delivering them to the organization.
St. Margaret’s grade 3 students completed a service-learning project ahead of the holiday season, partnering with Family Assistance Ministries to help those in need across Orange County.

The project was in line with the grade 3 service theme of hunger, and culminated with filling a SMES van with needed items and delivering them to the organization.

The unit, led by grade 3 teachers and Lower School Director of Community Life Tupper Spring, was a month-long service-learning project where students met with FAM Chief Development Officer Mary Gray Perdue for a developmentally appropriate presentation on FAM and its mission, where brainstormed questions and ideas for how they could better serve the organization.

The students then learned the needs of the organization, spent 10 days collecting items for donation to FAM, and completed the project by loading those donations into a St. Margaret’s van. The full van then delivered the donations to the organization’s headquarters in San Clemente.

Family Assistance Ministries is a faith-based charitable non-profit organization assisting those in need in Orange County with resources for food, shelter, and personalized supportive counsel and aid, helping clients bridge the gap from dependency to self-sufficiency.
