Digital Microscopes Allowing Life Science Students to Continue Invaluable Hands-On Learning

St. Margaret's digital microscopes allow for hands-on learning while adhering to St. Margaret's health and safety protocols.
In an Upper School biology class this week, two lab partners examined a slide while learning the basics of operating a digital microscope, including magnification, reversal of images and plane of focus. The technology allowed them to continue hands-on learning while adhering to St. Margaret’s health and safety protocols.

Thanks to its digital capabilities, the microscope’s projection was displayed on a digital device, meaning neither student needed to touch the eyepiece. For lab partners in biology, the digital microscopes were set up on one side of a Plexiglas partition with the display tablet on the other, allowing both students to immerse in that day’s lab.

These types of digital microscopes are uncommon learning tools outside of the college environment. St. Margaret’s purchased them with a generous PTF grant two years ago.

“They have been incredibly invaluable during the remote learning and campus flex formats,” Upper School science teacher Jennifer Ross-Viola said. “I had one at home when we were learning remotely and could project what I was seeing on my scope by running the image through my computer and sharing my screen. We are so fortunate to have these tools.”

St. Margaret’s has five digital microscopes in the Upper School and 12 in the Middle School. They are used in classes such as grade 7 life science, Upper School biology, AP biology, marine science, and research methods in life science honors.
