Students Learn About Colleges and Universities in Virtual Gatherings as Seniors Begin Application Process

Much like in-person visits, representatives will answer questions and provide insight about the campus, academic programs, student life, the application process and more.
As Upper School seniors begin to focus on the college-application process, St. Margaret’s College Counseling Office has once again arranged for students to meet with representatives from colleges and universities around the country this fall.

This year, the sessions have gone virtual, and more than 80 colleges and universities have scheduled time to meet with St. Margaret’s students in September and October. Much like in-person visits, representatives will answer questions and provide insight about their campus, academic programs, student life, the application process and more.

While the visits are popular with St. Margaret’s senior class, they are open to all Upper School students.

“We encourage students to attend college meetings because at the most basic, students hear the language of college admissions,” St. Margaret’s Director of College Counseling Roland Allen said. “That’s why we encourage students in younger grades to attend these meetings. Often, college representatives walk students through how applications are evaluated by their institutions. This is valuable for seniors as they begin to craft supplemental essays for individual colleges. Additionally, students learn how colleges are distinctive from other institutions they might be considering.”

The meetings are a valuable arrangement for the Class of 2021 especially, as this year’s seniors begin a college application process unlike any other with adjusted requirements and altered standards in place. Through these meetings, students are able to gain insight specific to schools they are interested in and ask specific questions to representatives who are often among the first to read a student’s application.

Schools meeting with St. Margaret’s students this fall include Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, New York University, Washington University in St. Louis, Southern Methodist University, University of Oregon, University of Michigan, Brown University, Syracuse University and the University of Chicago. The colleges and universities are of all different sizes, private and public, across the United States and even several in Europe.
