Grade 6 Students Learn the Importance of Writing and Goal-Setting in Guest Presentations

Guest speakers from a variety of career paths shared their passions in life and how writing is important to the work they do.
St. Margaret’s grade 6 writing students learned more about the importance of writing in a variety of careers this week, as several guest speakers presented remotely across all of the grade 6 writing blocks.

Middle School English teacher Owen Beitner arranged the speakers, part of what he sees as a recurring feature of the class.

“My goal is for our guest speakers to join our students to share their passions in life and how writing is important to the work they do,” Mr. Beitner said.

One of this week’s speakers was Mohammad Jaffrey, who has worked in partnership marketing for Disney, as well as doing creative ventures in his spare time ranging from calligraphy to writing.

“At Disney, we want to tell great stories that reflect the world and the diversity of the world,” Mr. Jaffrey said. “I was fortunate to be able to work on films like Moana, Coco, Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time, which showed that all kinds of people can achieve success and all kinds of people can achieve greatness.”

He also spoke of his interest in writing, which he said, “has always been a great way for me to express myself.”

Other speakers this week included:

• Rob Mooring, a college guidance counselor and former college admissions officer.
• Sean Fox, a television and film production writer and director in New York
• Itay Dvir – a Harvard University student majoring in applied math and economics
• Jack Burrows – a designer at Treyarch

At the end of each session, Mr. Beitner asked each guest to give advice for grade 6 students, with answers ranging from “follow the joy in life” to “learn from every situation and find the silver lining in all you do.”

Mr. Beitner said, “While I want my students to love writing, I believe it is equally important for them to understand that having dreams and pursuing them in their school and personal life will pay off in the long run.”
