Upper School Student’s Research Paper Selected for Publication in The Concord Review

Espen’s research paper, written as part of his Upper School introduction to historical research methods class, is the first from St. Margaret’s to be selected for the publication.
St. Margaret’s senior Espen Garner will be published in the upcoming issue of The Concord Review, the only quarterly journal in the world to publish the academic research of secondary students.

Espen’s research paper, written as part of his Upper School introduction to historical research methods class, is the first from St. Margaret’s to be selected for the publication. The paper, titled “The Analysis of the Viking Time in North America and the Effects the Viking Trip Had on Christopher Columbus’s Journey” is 5,300 words long and cites 20 sources in his bibliography. He wrote the paper while enrolled in the class his sophomore year.

“When students submit papers to The Concord Review, they are told that they will keep them on file for two years, as long as they are still in high school,” said Stacey von Winckelmann, who teaches the historical research methods courses. “In Espen's case, it worked out and he will be published in his senior year.”

Introduction to historical research methods is an honors-level elective that provides students a closer look at the meticulous work done by historians, and prepares students for future research at the college level and beyond. The curriculum focuses heavily on developing those skills; students learn how databases are constructed, how to critically evaluate sources, and how to organize research proposals and annotated bibliographies. As part of the class requirements, students’ final papers are submitted for consideration to The Concord Review, which has published more than 1,300 exemplary history essays by high school students since its founding in 1987.
