Kicked off by a joyful, spirit-filled film featuring more than 65 members of the professional community, St. Margaret’s officially opened the 2020-2021 school year with its annual All School Opening Ceremony on Monday.

The Ceremony took place via Zoom and was attended by faculty, staff, parents and the 2020-2021 student body of 1,230, which includes 185 new students, 113 new families, 42 new students with siblings already at St. Margaret’s, three new sets of twins and 11 new students moving from outside California.

They were greeted by a special film featuring welcome messages and well wishes from professional community members across campus, who have prepared for both the Remote Learning Model and the Campus Flex Model for on-campus learning. Early Childhood School students returned to campus Monday; grades K-6 are scheduled to return to campus on Monday, August 31, and St. Margaret’s is optimistic that grades 7-12 will be able to return to campus soon after.

Head of School Will Moseley recognized milestone classes, as is tradition during the Opening Ceremony. That includes the Class of 2035 enrolling in the Early Childhood School this year, the Class of 2028 in grade 5, the Class of 2025 in Grade 8, and the Class of 2021 leading the school as seniors this year.

Mr. Moseley also took time to expand on three school-wide goals for the year, which align with the school’s mission.
  • The first goal, under Learning, pertains to diversity, equity and inclusion. “We will continue with this incredibly important work this year to ensure that every member of our community is known, loved and appreciated for who they are.”
  • The second goal, under Leadership, involves implementing the Campus Flex Model. “We are going to learn and grow together in new and exciting ways as we implement our Campus Flex Model.”
  • The third goal, under Service, reimagines the role of service and community in a pandemic. “We will explore and implement new ways to strengthen our sense of community on campus and within the greater San Juan Capistrano community.”
The Ceremony also featured prayers by Father James Livingston and Mother KC Robertson, opening comments and advice from Associated Student Body president Logan Wojcik, a reading by Father Earl Gibson, and the prayers of the people by student Coco Johnson.

“So many things have changed since March 13, our last day together on campus; yet the most important things have not changed – our love and care for each other and the way we create community,” Mr. Moseley said. “I want to assure you that we are well prepared when given the go ahead to return all of you to campus in a safe, healthy and caring way. We can’t wait for that day to arrive!”
