Professional Community Returns to Campus in Preparation for 2020-2021 School Year

St. Margaret’s professional community was on campus this week, engaging in training, professional development and making final preparations for the 2020-2021 school year in their classrooms.
Most of St. Margaret’s professional community was on campus this week, engaging in training, professional development and making final preparations for the 2020-2021 school year in their classrooms. Here’s a look at some aspects of a busy week on campus!

Health and Wellness
All members of the professional community met with the school’s health-and-wellness team, led by Patrick Bendzick, director of student wellness, and Jeanne Kang, lead school nurse. The team provided the latest insight on COVID-19 and best practices for prevention, and outlined procedures and policies in place for the St. Margaret’s Health Center during the 2020-2021 school year. The professional community also tested the school’s daily health screening protocols, including the health check app and thermal cameras, and wore masks and practiced social distancing while on campus.

Technology
Division-specific technology training took place throughout the week, as the professional community engaged in testing new technology in their classrooms.

Advanced videoconferencing systems have been installed in classrooms in all four divisions, providing live, interactive access via Zoom to classrooms. The videoconferencing system includes an HD camera with automated zoom and pan capabilities, an array microphone and full-range speakers, and an iPad for the teacher to manage the system from any location in the classroom.  The system integrates with existing classroom technology including touchscreen teaching displays to provide screen sharing of presentations and visual content.

Meetings
A variety of meetings took place in preparation for the start of school next week, including adviser training, student support services training, campus safety and cybersecurity training, division meetings and department meetings.  Addition training will take place next week including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and follow up to the school’s professional development summer course on continuous learning.

Reggio Emilia
The Early Childhood School welcomes students back to campus on August 24, and had several workshops based on the Reggio Emilia approach to early-childhood education, of which St. Margaret’s play-based, research-based program is aligned. It included sessions on “Finding Voice in Young Children in the Time of COVID-19” as well as “Creating Environments of Learning” and “Making Learning Visible for the Community.”
