Admissions Officers From University of Chicago, MIT, USC and Michigan Meet With SMES Students to Discuss College Admissions

The sessions are a way to hear insight from college representatives on a variety of topics around the admissions process.
Upper School juniors and sophomores have had the opportunity to take part in several virtual “Lunch with Admissions” sessions over the last few weeks organized by St. Margaret’s College Counseling Office. So far, representatives from the University of Southern California, University of Michigan and University of Chicago have met with St. Margaret’s students, and a visit with a Massachusetts Institute of Technology representative is planned for next week.

“These admissions representatives were hand-picked and chosen to make sure our students are getting high-quality information in light of the current situation,” Director of College Counseling Roland Allen said.

The sessions are a way to hear insight from college representatives on a variety of topics around the admissions process. Some of the issues discussed include how to build a college list, questions about changes to the admissions testing policies, and how to successfully interview. More than 50 students have attended each session.

St. Margaret’s College Counseling team of Mr. Allen, Associate Director Amy Warren and Associate Director Jeff Jablonski have been staying on top of a fluid college-admissions process in light of the impacts of the pandemic from college campus closures to standardized testing requirements.

For the Class of 2020, all 120 seniors were accepted to a four-year college or university. Nearly 70 percent have been accepted to a highly competitive college or university, according to the College Counseling Office, including offers from every Ivy League school (comprising 10 percent of the class)—Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Yale University.
