Grade 2 Students Learn About Immigration and Identity in Library Unit
Grade 2 students have explored identity, immigration and family traditions in a library unit that led to meaningful discussions with relatives.
Grade 2 students in the Lower School have explored identity, immigration and family traditions in a library unit that led to meaningful discussions with relatives about their identity.
The unit, led by Lower School Library teacher Melissa Fisher, supplements a social studies unit on family the grade 2 students study every year. Mrs. Fisher led lessons about immigration, Ellis Island and refugees, read true stories about families who have immigrated to the United States and traditions within those families, and led a lesson on identity with assistance from Director of Equity and Inclusion Victor Cota.
Students were given an assignment to work with family members to learn more about their identity, including sharing and cooking favorite family recipes, trying on special clothes that help celebrate holidays, reading a favorite book, and other activities that share traditions and experiences.
Mrs. Fisher shared photos and stories on the grade 2 class pages on the mySMES portal.
“I hope students had fun learning about their family and understanding the uniqueness of everyone’s story,” Mrs. Fisher said.
