Tartans Win Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete Awards

Charlotte Jones and Will Kenner were named League Athletes of the Year while Jones and Chris Mullen were tabbed as CIF Scholar-Athletes.
Three Tartans continued the storied tradition of St. Margaret's success in the classroom and on the playing fields over a shortened athletic year.

Seniors Charlotte Jones and Will Kenner have been named Academy and San Joaquin League Athletes of the Year, respectively. Jones, a four-year three-sport athlete at St. Margaret's is a Bates College commit for soccer. Jones was a defensive mainstay for the Tartans on the pitch, leading St. Margaret's to an Academy League Championship in 2020. In the fall, Jones anchored the 2019 CIF Champion Tartan cross country team and finished third at the CIF State Championship in November.

"It was wonderful to see Charlotte recognized by the league as a three-sport athlete. She has 10 league championships, two CIF Championships, and one State Regional Championship to her name," said Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick. "It's a list of accolades that's hard to top, and her influence on creating a positive team culture is undeniable. We are incredibly proud to have her as a Tartan."

Will Kenner, a Cornell University commit for football, led the Tartans to a San Joaquin League Championship this past fall. Kenner also picked up an All-CIF award, a Second Team All-Orange County nod and the San Joaquin League Football Player of the Year award in 2019, amassing 1,301 yards and 19 touchdowns in the fall. Although in a different league for basketball, Kenner was a force for the Tartans on the hardwood, leading St. Margaret's to a 2020 Academy League Championship and winning a First-Team All-Academy League nomination.

"Will Kenner being named athlete of the year for the league is truly remarkable, as he is a great young man who can accomplish any task he puts his mind to," said St. Margaret's head football coach Kory Minor. "Will was a true blessing to coach, and I am thankful for the opportunity. We will miss him dearly, but I expect him to achieve great things at Cornell."

CIF Scholar-Athlete Awards

The CIF Scholar-Athlete Awards are awarded to one female and one male who have demonstrated the highest level of combined academic, athletic and extra-curricular achievement while maintaining a minimum unweighted 3.5 grade-point average during their sophomore, junior and senior years. This award is the highest individual award bestowed upon scholar-athletes by the CIF Southern Section.

St. Margaret's 2019-2020 awardees are Charlotte Jones and Chis Mullen. Both are student-athletes at the top of their respective games and their academic pursuits.

"Charlotte's strengths are not in what she does, but rather how she does it. She is such a mature, dedicated, hard-working person. Charlotte is a such a strong leader, but she does it in an unassuming, others-centered way and never seeks recognition," said academic advisor Chelsea Runge. "She's just such a lovely, genuine, thoughtful, hard-working person!"

Mullen, an accomplished pole-vaulter for the Tartans, boasts an intense academic course load and still found time to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Mullen will head to Colorado State in the fall.

"Chris regularly surprises his advisory and me with unique and humble accomplishments and endeavors," said academic advisor Pete Clark. "Watching Chris and another advisee compete at the CIF pole vault finals last year showed that while they were competing against each other, they were more interested in celebrating each other's jumps and demonstration of technique rather than winning at all costs. This is the mark of a person who cares about others, values the process of improvement, and seeks quiet accomplishment not for accolades, but intrinsic internal satisfaction."

Congratulations, Tartans!
