Upper School Principal Jeneen Graham offered her praise to the Class of 2020. “On behalf of the entire St. Margaret’s professional community, we are exceedingly proud of and impressed by the unique skills and talents, depth of character, love of learning and determined scholarship of the Class of 2020. It’s clear with these achievements that their authentic selves shined through to colleges and universities across the country, and it is no surprise to us that so many schools want these wonderful Tartans to join their communities.

“Kudos are also due to our parents who have lovingly supported their children and partnered with our outstanding team of three college counselors, led by Roland Allen, who work one-on-one with our students and their parents through the college review and admission process to ensure they explore myriad options and identify and present themselves to schools that are a right fit for them and their interests,” Dr. Graham said.

The seniors are supported in the college admission process throughout their Upper School experience by St. Margaret’s expert College Counseling team of Director of College Counseling Mr. Allen, Associate Director of College Counseling Amy Warren, and Associate Director of College Counseling Jeff Jablonski as they now make their final decisions on where they will matriculate in the fall. Most colleges and universities have annual May 1 matriculation decision deadline, though this year some have extended this to June 1.

“Each year, close to 200 college admission officers visit our campus one-by-one to meet with our students. They often comment that our campus culture feels unique and special, and how friendly, approachable and kind our students are in addition to their outstanding academic achievement,” said Mr. Allen. “Colleges also are looking for students who have voice. In other words, students who have something to say and can say it well. Students in this year’s senior class, in particular, have voice. They are bright, curious and accomplished. Clearly, these traits came through as admissions committees reviewed our students this year, and we are very glad they see what we already know about this remarkable group of young women and men.”

The exceptional success for St. Margaret’s 2020 graduates comes amid a landscape of possible changes for college admission due to the coronavirus, and St. Margaret’s College Counselors are keeping their fingers on the pulse through their wide network of college admission deans and officers, with whom they have built trusted and longstanding relationships.

“Colleges are aware of how COVID-19 is impacting students all over the country. We are having daily conversations with colleges about their admission initiatives designed to ease the stress students might be feeling about the application and matriculation process,” said Ms. Warren. “I am very impressed with their willingness to makes changes to longstanding policies in response to the current climate and support interested students in their schools.”

Mr. Allen added, “We are staying abreast of new information from colleges, and committed to informing our current seniors and rising seniors to answer questions and make sure they are well informed of all aspects of their options, considerations, and any changes in the matriculation or application process through these times.”

Mr. Allen, who sits on the University of Chicago California Counselors’ Advisory Council, reached out to one of his colleagues to discuss the current climate. University of Chicago Director of Undergraduate Admission Peter Wilson offered this advice to students and families: “School counselors are our primary source of information about changes to academic planning or student experiences related to Coronavirus. The University of Chicago has frequently been in touch with school and college-focused counselors like Roland Allen and his team to help us better understand what students are experiencing, and to find ways we can help students adjust to a ‘new normal’ as they navigate the college search and application process for the next year."

The College Counseling team is planning a series of upcoming Zoom-based meetings with the senior class and the rising senior class and their parents to maintain ongoing, face-to-face guidance, information sharing, and communication during the school’s campus closure. In the next two weeks, they have scheduled a Virtual Town Hall Meeting for the Class of 2020 students and their parents, as well as a Zoom conversation with a University of Chicago admission officer and the rising seniors, class of 2021, and their parents.
