With the social distancing still in place, life on the inside of your four walls may be more challenging than ever. Whether you are going a little stir-crazy from homebound isolation, managing working from home, homeschooling your child, or a combination of all three, this may be a good time to add a mindfulness activity to your day. Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening in the present tense and acknowledging your feelings. Here are five tips for a mindful practice:

  1. Limit multitasking. High multi-tasking can affect the cognitive and emotional control of the brain.
  2. Make peace with uncertainty. We do not have control over when the social distancing will end. However, we can control how we deal with it.
  3. Be intentional about creating space to recharge. Find a place in your home that can provide a peaceful place for you to escape when you need to recharge.
  4. Do a mindful exercise daily. Meditate, take a quiet walk to enjoy nature, do breathing exercises, sit quietly in a peaceful place, eat mindfully, or do a gratitude journal.
  5. Take a deep breath, literally. Most of our day we take shallow breaths. Get tuned in to your own breathing during the day and add an occasional deep breathe.
