WNBA Selects Payton Chester ’24 as 2020 Honorary Draft Pick

The WNBA paid special tribute to St. Margaret’s grade 8 student Payton Chester by posthumously selecting her as an honorary 2020 WNBA draft pick.

The tribute took place at the beginning of the WNBA Draft, which was held last week and televised on ESPN. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the honorary selection of Payton and her two Mamba Academy basketball teammates—Gianna Bryant and Alyssa Altobelli—in a heartfelt presentation that included the display of three WNBA jerseys with their names.

“These athletes represented the future of the WNBA. Players who were following their passions, acquiring knowledge of the game and exhibiting skills way beyond their years. They represented the next generation of stars in our league,” Engelbert said. “While it brings us pain not to see their dreams come to fruition, I’m grateful and proud to announce them tonight as honorary draft picks.”

Payton’s father, Chris Chester, accepted on his daughter’s behalf and thanked the WNBA for honoring Payton, providing heartfelt remarks of her commitment and love for basketball.

“She was a fierce competitor, and her skill and determination to play in the WNBA was something I have no doubt she would have achieved, but was only surpassed by her joy for life and the game,” Mr. Chester said.
