PHOTOS: Grade 4 Explores Archways in Engineering-Based STEAM Challenge

Grade 4’s interdisciplinary study of the California missions has been a lesson in history, visual design and even structural engineering.
The STEAM Block recently completed an engineering challenge that explored the design and structural elements of archways, a common theme seen in California’s 21 missions, including Mission San Juan Capistrano.
That led to a home challenge for students to create different structures that incorporate one or multiple arches. They created arches out of cardstock distributed by Lower School science teacher David Beshk before the school closure, then tested the load of their creations and recorded their load capacity in the form of a bar graph.
“The challenge allowed students to see why arches have been a popular architectural element for centuries, as they combine an appealing design with structural soundness,” Mr. Beshk said. “I am so happy to see the excitement and creativity the grade 4 students have shown at home. It’s a testament to their dedication to learning.”
