Lower School Celebrates Reading at 10th Annual Literacy Day

Lower School students celebrated a love of reading with a full day of activities during the 10th annual Literacy Day at St. Margaret’s.
From reading dogs to a spirited competition to reading time with buddies, Lower School students had a full day of activities Monday during the 10th annual Literacy Day at St. Margaret’s, an event that celebrates a love of reading.

One of the most popular activities was a visit by four reading dogs, Dexter, Baxter, Little Bear and Delilah, to St. Margaret’s Library. Lower School students learned about how the dogs, who also work as therapy dogs, are trained to help children work on their reading skills by being an attentive and trusting companion as the students read out loud. The dogs’ owners then demonstrated by reading a book to the students.

Later in the day, students took turns practicing their reading to a reading dove named Cloud.
The day also featured reading time with their buddies, as part of the Lower School buddy program. Chalmers Field was full of students and their favorite books that they read to their buddies during shared reading time.

Also taking place during Literacy Day:
  • Students and teachers were invited to dress as their favorite book character.
  • The Lower School Chapel featured a homily on a love of reading by Lower School Principal Jennifer Blount.
  • St. Margaret’s had a Battle of the Books competition in Sillers Hall, with the top two teams qualifying to compete in the South Orange County BOB Tournament on March 17 at St. Margaret’s.
