St. Margaret's Student-Athletes Commit to Top Colleges During Winter Signing Period

Seven student-athletes from the Class of 2020 committed to continue their academic careers and play intercollegiate athletics during the winter signing period.
St. Margaret's Episcopal School is pleased to announce that seven student-athletes from the Class of 2020 committed to play intercollegiate athletics next year during the winter National Signing Day. Seniors Dean Chong, Jalyn Chun, Kyle Juergens, Charlotte Jones, Will Kenner, Audrey Larson and Nicole Ryu will continue their academic pursuits, as well as play their respective sport, at an impressive group of colleges and universities.

These student-athletes join two of their classmates who committed during the signing period in the fall.

Dean Chong, Swarthmore College

Dean Chong, a three-year varsity starter and 2019-2020 captain for St. Margaret's, has committed to study and play soccer at NCAA Division-III Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa.

Dean was a member of the 2018-2019 CIF Finalist Tartan soccer team and was named Second-Team All-League in 2019. Dean currently leads the team in assists this season.

At the club level, Dean was a member of the Pateadores Soccer Club's 2014 and 2015 international squads, traveling to Madrid and Rome to participate in international tournaments and friendly matches. In 2015, Dean was named AS Roma Player of Tour.

Dean volunteers his time at Newport Beach Boys and Girls Club as an activity counselor and founded a non-profit organization, Cleat Nation.

Dean intends to major in business or economics at Swarthmore.

Jalyn Chun, California Lutheran University

Jalyn Chun, a four-year member of the Tartan girls volleyball program, has committed to study and play volleyball at NCAA Division-III California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Jalyn, who was named First-Team All-League in 2019 and Second-Team All-League in 2018, was an integral part of the Tartan volleyball team. Jalyn was also twice named to the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament All-Tournament team.

Jalyn volunteers her time at the St. Margaret's Summer Volleyball Camp, Meals on Wheels and at Kid Works in Santa Ana.

Jalyn intends to major in exercise science at Cal Lutheran.

Charlotte Jones, Bates College

Charlotte Jones, a member of the 2019 Tartan SoCal Soccer Regional Championship team, has committed to study and play soccer at NCAA Division-III Bates College in Lewiston, Me.

Charlotte, a four-year starter for the Tartans, was named First-Team All-League all four years as well as an All-SoCal team member, First-Team All-CIF and First-Team All-Orange County in 2019. Charlotte was also named San Joaquin League Player of the Year in 2019.

Charlotte is also a member of the 2018 and 2019 CIF Champion Tartan cross country squad as well as the track & field program at St. Margaret's.

Charlotte volunteers her time with Rustic Pathways service program and Special Camp at St. Margaret's.

Kyle Juergens, Boise State University

Kyle Juergens, a four-year starter in football at St. Margaret's, has committed to study and play football at NCAA Division-I Boise State University in Boise, Id.

Kyle has been a stalwart on the Tartan defensive and offensive lines, leading St. Margaret's to three consecutive league championships. Kyle notched three First-Team All-League selections and has been named to the South Team participating in the Orange County All-Star Game.

Kyle volunteers his time at an Orange County homeless shelter and has participated in clothing and sporting equipment drives for county foster children.

Kyle intends to major in business at Boise State.

Will Kenner, Cornell University

Will Kenner, a member of the Tartan 2019 league champion football team, has committed to study and play football at NCAA Division-I Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

Will amassed 1,301 receiving yards and 19 receiving touchdowns in the 2019 campaign, ranking him No.2 in Orange County regular-season play. Will was also named Division VI All-CIF in 2019.

Will intends on majoring in economics at Cornell.

Audrey Larson, Union College

Audrey Larson, a member of the 2018 and 2019 Tartan U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Champion lacrosse teams, has committed to study and play lacrosse at NCAA Division-III Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

Audrey, a 2019 MaxLaxOC.com honorable mention, was also a 2019 Under Armour Lacrosse All-American selection. At St. Margaret's, Audrey was also a member of the 2018 CIF Champion cross country and 2019 SoCal Regional Champion soccer programs.

Audrey volunteers her time with Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano.

Audrey intends on majoring in environmental studies at Union.

Nicole Ryu, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Nicole Ryu has committed to study and play softball at NCAA Division-III Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

Nicole, the youngest member of the Korean National Softball Team, compiled a .450 average as a lead-off hitter. Nicole also played in the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Tournament for four consecutive years and reached the Colorado Invitational Tournament semifinal round.

At St. Margaret's, Nicole has been a four-year member of the track & field program and qualified for the CIF Prelims in the 4x400 relay in 2019.

Nicole volunteers her time as a St. Margaret's Admission Ambassador and as a Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano tutor for the past four years.

Nicole intends on majoring in Chemical Engineering at M.I.T.

"In an era of youth sports specialization, it's rewarding to see a group of multiple-sport athletes achieve their athletic and academic goals at the highest levels. All seven of today's student-athletes play two or more sports, and I truly believe that the experience has made them better prepared for collegiate competition," said Director of Athletics Patrick Bendzick. "They are more competitive, better teammates, and fully prepared for the challenges ahead. We are very proud of them and truly appreciate their contributions to the school."
