From Tetragonal to Technophile, Students Take on Tough Words in Middle School Spelling Bee

All three finalists will move on to the Orange County Spelling Bee written round next month.
Spelling words like macrophage, factotum and tetragonal, 16 Middle School students competed in the St. Margaret’s Spelling Bee last week with a trip to the Orange County Spelling Bee on the line.

Taking on tough words in front of their classmates inside Hurlbut Theater, the students had a competitive event this year. Six rounds were needed to whittle the field down to the final three spellers. Grade 7 student Emily Chen emerged as the winner, spelling “diplopia” to take top honors ahead of grade 8 student Ronin McMahon and grade 7 student Abigail Hancock.

All three finalists will move on to the Orange County Spelling Bee written round, which will take place on February 24. The written round will serve as a qualifier for the oral round of the Orange County Spelling Bee on February 29.

Participating alongside Emily, Ronin and Abigail were grade 6 students Lucas Monge, Cameron Liu, Audrey Kim, Claire Martin and Sharon Cheung, grade 7 students Kent Chacon, Tanner Evanson and Christine Li, and grade 8 students Maya Reddy, Drew Bowman, Radley Copps, Marisol Guillena and Rishabh Mallela.
