While St. Margaret’s college counseling program begins in grade 8 and carries students all the way through college matriculation, students in the class of 2021 took the next big step in their Tartan path to college this week.

Juniors and their parents took part in an informative event this week, organized by St. Margaret’s College Counseling Office, to begin the individualized relationship between the students and their dedicated college counselor and launch the college application process.

The students and their college counselors will begin to plan a path for researching colleges, college visits and summer activities. Each student is assigned to a college counselor who will get to know their personal interests, strengths and goals.

At this week’s launch event, students learned more about the upcoming college-selection process with the help of Elena Hicks, dean of undergraduate admissions at Southern Methodist University. Ms. Hicks urged students to be authentic in the college search and college application process, and joined Director of College Counseling Roland Allen in an engaging question-and-answer session with students.

In addition, Associate Directors of College Counseling Amy Warren and Jeff Jablonski spoke separately to Class of 2021 parents, offering advice on how parents can help students find their best-fit school, and sharing insight on how success in college is linked to high engagement on campus.

Next week, Class of 2021 families will be invited to take part in the Coastline OC Case Studies program to gain a deeper understanding of the college admissions process and connect with representatives from more than 70 colleges and universities. Students and parents will form imaginary admissions committees, where they will discuss mock applications and collectively decide which fictitious students to admit, waitlist and deny. Through the experience, attendees will understand the ways in which a college application is read, common mistakes are made, and what goes into application review.

St. Margaret’s college counseling program begins in grade 8 and carries students through to college matriculation. Each year is coordinated and mapped to give students a primary focus to help them prepare, explore a range of activities and define their interests. The college counselors work closely with students, encouraging them in their growth and pursuit of intellectual, athletic and creative endeavors through the Upper School years.
