PHOTOS: St. Margaret’s Day Explores the Pursuit of Purpose

Head of School Will Moseley encouraged the Tartan community to emulate the purposeful lives of the school’s namesake, St. Margaret of Scotland, as well as school founder Father Ernest D. Sillers.
In a moving homily during the St. Margaret’s Day All-School Eucharist on Thursday, Head of School Will Moseley encouraged the Tartan community to emulate the purposeful lives of the school’s namesake, St. Margaret of Scotland, as well as school founder Father Ernest D. Sillers.

Referencing the book Wisdom From The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, which was first cited in the fall Upper School honors assembly speech by senior Angela Mendoza Ortega this school year, Mr. Moseley encouraged Tartans to commit to four agreements: Be impeccable with your words, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best.

“I believe that leaders such as St. Margaret and Father Sillers have the ability to follow these agreements consistently. And in doing so, they not only experience success in their life work, but also a sense of purpose and fulfillment,” Mr. Moseley said.

The entire student body celebrated the school’s namesake and the history of the school during St. Margaret’s Day on Thursday in Pasternack Field House. Mr. Moseley recognized former heads of school Markham Campaigne (1986-2003) and Marcus Hurlbut (2003-2013), who participated in the special day.

Referencing Angela’s earlier speech, Mr. Moseley said, “You have to see purpose as a sense of direction that fuels your passions and allows you to find enjoyment in what it is that you do. I think adopting these Four Agreements as guideposts, can help each of us find that sense of direction for which Angela was speaking.”
