Team email 10/17/19

Hi Surf Team & Surf Team parents!

Here is your mid-week update, as we get ready for our first contest of the 2019-2020 season:

-          What: info for the first surf contest!
-          Who: we’re up against El Toro in the first round (individuals that advance will surf against later…)
-          When: this Sunday, Oct. 20th. Our first heat starts at EXACTLY 8:00am (please arrive by 7:15am, …or earlier if you want to free surf!)
-          Where: at 9th Street in Huntington Beach (drive NORTH of HB Pier, you’ll see the EZ Ups for SSS)
-          Why: because surfing is awesome!!

Arrival at contest site: All surfers need to arrive at 9th Street by 7:15amto setup, cheer on, video other heats, & get yourself physically/mentally ready. Don’t discount mental prep when it comes to competition, GET PSYCHED!!

Departure from contest site: Future contest days may start at different times (see attached document) but contests will always wrap up after medals/trophies are handed out at about 1:30pm (see the other attached document). Surfers need to PLAN ON STAYING UNTIL about 1:30 pm EACH CONTEST DAY to video, applaud, and cheer on our surfers that make it to the Finals. Signing up for “Surf Team means you are committing to this team. It puts me in an awkward position when individual surfers ask to leave early and I am the only one cheering on the SMES surfers that make it to the Finals. If a timing issue arises, please let me know in as far advance as possible, but remember…you have signed up for a Surf TEAM. Love and support your teammates, even if you are not competing, or you lose out early! J

Heat Videoing: As we have done in the past, please come with your phone (or other video camera) ready to video! You and a buddy are asked to “partner up” so you can video each other’s heats. Make sure you buddy up with someone in a different heat (see attached first round heat sheet) and come with plenty of battery power & memory available so your phone doesn’t run out during your sick barrel/air!!). Self-reflection is a valuable component to getting better at anything, right?!!

Contest day lunch, snacks, drinks: For the families that came to the parent meeting, you already know, but I have randomly assigned each family to a contest day (please see below). There are 16 of us total when all are present, so please contact the other families BEFORE your date/contest and work out the “who/what/how” of helping keep our crew well nourished. If the below date is no good for you, please take it upon yourself to call or email another family to swap dates. Thank you in advance!!
In the past, great ideas have been: sub sandwiches, healthy snacks, and a drink (Please no doughnuts, pizza, junk food, or soda…)
-          Oct. 20  (9th St, Huntington Beach)            “Benton & Kenna” Barlow, Rooney (this weekend only plan for 11 of us)
-          Nov. 24  (San Clemente Pier)                    Hayden & Riley” Chester, Vandenburg
-          Jan. 12  (9th St, Huntington Beach)             McAleer, Sharifian, Bernstein
-          Feb. 9  (San Clemente Pier)                       Rosenhain, Dodd, Adams
-          Mar. 15 (Huntington Beach Pier)               Cuda, Kramer
One more side note from the SSS that I too would like to implement as often as possible: We have a special request. I know some of the teams are already doing this but we would like to suggest that we eliminate the use of single use plastic water bottles.  Our Staff has been doing this for a few years and hope that our SSS teams can help keep this pollution out of our ocean and landfill.  We want to be part of the solution not part of the problem.  There are 2 1/2 gallon jugs as well as 5-gallon jugs available.  Use paper cups or bring your own reusable water containers.  Thanks for your help and have a great event.” Carolyn Krammer, SSS Competition Director  /  Sue Lister, SSS Admin Director

Other info:
1)      Often the SSS emails me the “official heat sheets” the day before competition. Please know that I will forward that to you as soon as I receive it. I know there have been some last minute changes due to the four-day weekend, so don’t worry if your name appears on this sheet and you have already told me you are not coming. If you are coming and you would like to fill in on longboard or bodyboard, let me know ASAP and we will pencil you in at the contest site! You just need to come prepared with the board(s) you are surfing on…ask a friend to borrow a board to help us FILL ALL competition slots! If there are any concerns, please email me back ASAP.
2)      Our awesome team photographer, Cameron Sharifian, has taken great photos the last two surf seasons. Here is a link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v0cujy6dgeqqn94/AADHzJrTcj7j0hvxSgYEK0Hta?dl=0  Make sure you tell him THANK YOU…swimming around the lineup is hard work!!

Surf contest bus: As far as I have been told, so far no one needs a ride to (or home from) the contest on the “Surf Bus” this coming weekend. PLEASE reply to this email and let me know ASAP if your status changes.

Can’t wait to see you at Friday’s practice at Creek!!

Gracias & aloha,
Sr.
PS Sorry for the long email, just trying to keep you all informed… Surfers- as always, please reply to this emailand let me know that you “GOT IT” and let me know if you have any questions. Gracias compadres!
