St. Margaret’s celebrated 20 students this week whose academic achievements were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program and The College Board National Recognition Program.

National Merit Scholarship Program

A total of 19 students were honored by the National Merit Scholarship program, including two—Logan Burke and Thomas Hughes—who were named National Merit Scholar semifinalists.

The students, all current seniors, were honored based on their performance on the PSAT taken as juniors. Of 1.6 million National Merit Scholarship entrants nationwide, the top 3 percent receive commendation, and the top 1 percent are named semifinalists.

In February, semifinalists will be notified if they have advanced to be a National Merit Scholar finalist. From there, National Merit Scholarships are awarded to about 7,600 students nationwide from the finalist group based on abilities, skills and accomplishments.

National Merit Semifinalists: Logan Burke, Thomas Hughes

National Merit Commended Students: Carson C de Baca, Serena Carson, Shawn Chen, Emmy Flornes, Lara Hairapetian, Ella Kang, Wesley Kim, Alex Liang, Thomson Liu, Jack Manor, Alexandra Pierce, Alysse Pusey, Matt Rosenthal, Nicole Ryu, Reilly Shanahan, Lauryn Wilson, Emily Zhang
