St. Margaret’s Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month With Mariachi Band – See Video and Photos!
The band’s appearance was organized by students in the Upper School’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education (TIDE) group.
St. Margaret’s celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with an informative and entertaining appearance by Mariachi Nuevo Capistrano, a local mariachi band that includes Upper School senior Angela Mendoza Ortega.
The band’s appearance was organized by students in the Upper School’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education (TIDE) group, a leadership group committed to celebrating cultures in the school’s community and educating the student body on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The band played several songs to rousing ovations during performances in all four divisions. Angela, a TIDE member, introduced each song to students by noting its significance to Latinx cultures.
Mariachi Nuevo Capistrano played at Middle School Chapel, Upper School convocation, in the Early Childhood School Outdoor Classroom and during Lower School lunch.
“Our TIDE students came up with this as an impactful way for students of all ages to celebrate and learn about National Hispanic Heritage Month, and I was proud of them for seeing the idea through,” said Victor Cota, St. Margaret’s director of equity and inclusion and TIDE sponsor. “Mariachi Nuevo Capistrano was fantastic, and Angela did a wonderful job explaining the cultural meaning behind the great music her band played.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of the American Latinx community.
