Tartan Golf, Volleyball and Cross Country Programs Have Productive Week

St. Margaret's fall sports continue to excel in league competition.
Girls Golf

St. Margaret's girls golf team got the 2019 campaign underway Thursday afternoon, picking up a league win against Samueli Academy. Freshman Kate Lee shot a 42 while junior Amy Meng carded a 44 in the win. Sarah Tomeo nearly holed a wedge on the eighth hole and equaled the third-best score with Wendy Liang.

The Tartans will next face Fairmont Prep at Dad Miller Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Girls Volleyball

The Tartans continued an impressive league season run, defeating CVCS 3-0 on Sept. 24 and Sage Hill 3-0 on Sept. 26. St. Margaret's was led by kill leaders Emmy Flornes (19) and Liv Hale (12) against the Lightning. Jalyn Chun led with six aces.

Overall, the Tartans have received inspired play from Flornes (133 kills), Liv Hale (89 kills), Mary Collier (30 aces) and Jalyn Chun (23 aces).

St. Margaret's currently sits at No. 8 in CIF-SS Div. III and returns to play on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Sage Hill.

Cross Country

The Tartans made a statement in the first Academy League cross country meet of the season by only giving up 2 points over four divisional races. The varsity boys set the tone with a perfect score of 15 by taking the top five finishing spots in the race. Their depth was even more impressive with Aiden Montez finishing 6th and Chris Mullen finishing 8th.

"Any time you can put your top seven runners in the top eight of a race, it's a special day. But our goal was to run a controlled effort as a pack and give some of our new runners varsity experience. They did an excellent job of that, and I'm confident that there was more in the tank for many of them," head coach Patrick Bendzick said.

The varsity girls went 1-2-4-5-6 to beat second-place Sage Hill by 23 points. Four Tartans ran under 19 minutes on the Mason Park course, and all six athletes entered finished in the top 7.

The JV squads were equally impressive. The boys took 6 of the top 7 spots en route to a perfect score of 15, and the girls went 1-5 to do the same.

The team will have next week off from racing as they prepare for the second Academy League meet on Oct. 10, followed by the Clovis Invitational on Oct. 12. The latter of the two will be a preview of the state championships on the famed Woodward Park racecourse in Fresno. The Tartans are looking to defend their 2018 state championship on the boys side and avenge a narrow 6 point loss on the girls side.
