Upper School Students Conduct College-Level Scientific Research Through Partnership With UC Irvine

The students spend at least six weeks at UCI labs, working with professors and graduate researchers.
Taking on research projects in chemistry, robotics, biomedical engineering and more, 10 Upper School students spent this summer working in a college research environment through a longstanding partnership between St. Margaret’s and the University of California, Irvine.

The summer internship concluded this week, as the students presented their work and reflected on their experience during a reception attended by UCI and St. Margaret’s faculty, administration, graduate students and families.

The partnership between St. Margaret’s and the UCI Samueli School of Engineering is now in its 15th year. Coordinated by St. Margaret’s STEAM Fellow Jennifer Ross-Viola, Upper School engineering and science students are matched with UCI faculty members in a research area that aligns with their interest. The students spend at least six weeks at UCI labs, working with professors and graduate researchers while also receiving college credit for their work.

“To be able to partner with a leading institution like UC Irvine, and for our students to gain an understanding of college-level research under top academic minds in this way is such an incredible experience for them,” Dr. Ross-Viola said. “We are very grateful for this partnership and all the value it brings to our students at St. Margaret’s.”

Here are the Tartans who presented at UCI this week:
