Tartan Volleyball and Football Programs Bring Home Victories

The Tartans enjoyed success to start the long Labor Day weekend, producing clutch early-season victories.

 

 

St. Margaret's prevailed 38-9 in a non-league contest against visiting Yucca Valley on Friday evening on Tartan Field. The Tartans were led by quarterback Jake Carreon's four passing touchdowns, amassing 250 yards in the air on 18 completions. Will Kenner hauled in three touchdowns for St. Margaret's, with Cooper Barkate adding one. Running backs Matt Stevenson and Sebastian Chicas shared backfield duties, combing for 68 yards on the ground with Stevenson punching in a rushing touchdown.

 

The Tartan defense was tenacious all evening, keeping the Trojans in check at the line and in the secondary. Caden Smith led with 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks, followed closely by Kyle Juergens with eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.

 

Kicker Cameron Shirangi was five for five on PAT's and added a 26 yard field goal.

 

St. Margaret's will continue its non-league schedule on Friday, September 6, taking on La Mirada at home.

 

 

The Tartans stormed through the early rounds of the Portola Volleyball tournament, going 3-1 in pool play. Taking down Saddleback Valley Christian and Geldora in short order, St. Margaret's drew a talented Tustin Tillers squad in the final round, coming away with a 2-0 victory and the tournament crown.

 

St. Margaret's was led by Emmy Flornes with 54 kills over the two-day event. Mary Collier contributed 17 aces and Liv Hale tallied 11 blocks. Newcomer Makenna Lim controlled the back row for the Tartans all tournament and notched a passing average of 2.36.

 

The 1-1 Tartans will return to action on September 3, in a non-league contest against Mission Viejo on the road.
