Senior ISP Leads to New Art for Lower School Outdoor Classroom

Recent graduate Carly Kellner created digital art that is now displayed around the outdoor learning space for kindergarten and grade 1 students.
For her Independent Senior Project last spring, recent St. Margaret’s graduate Carly Kellner ’19 wanted to contribute to the beauty of St. Margaret’s campus through her creativity.

Her idea eventually led to the creation of art that is now on display in the Lower School Outdoor Classroom, visually enhancing the many different areas where kindergarten and grade 1 students engage, explore and play in an outdoor environment.

Carly took on the ISP with guidance from Lower School K-1 science teacher Erin Moore and Lower School art teacher Mary Mayer. Carly explored the Lower School Outdoor Classroom for inspiration, spoke at length with Mrs. Moore about the different uses of the space, then started creating digital art that would represent the spaces where they would be displayed.

Once completed, the art pieces were printed on canvases of various sizes, ranging from two feet tall to six feet tall. They were hung in the Lower School Outdoor Classroom, and Carly came to St. Margaret’s this week to see the final displays and sign each piece of art.

There is a dinosaur fossil art piece at the sand pit, art of a scooter and a bicycle at the tricycle loop, and art of books at the reading nook among many others. In all, 13 pieces of art serve as a subtle way to visually identify all of the different areas of the Outdoor Classroom.

“Carly did an incredible job,” Mrs. Moore said. “We are so happy to see our students learning and playing with her art as a backdrop. Her work adds color and personality to an already inspiring outdoor space.”

The Independent Senior Project is a capstone experiential learning assignment that gives Upper School seniors an opportunity to apply their learning through internships, volunteering, creative projects or an adventurous challenge in the natural world.
