VR Lab, Welcome Center and More: Campus Upgrades Enhance Spaces for 2019-2020 School Year

From the Library to the Lower School, St. Margaret’s campus was upgraded this summer to keep pace with student learning.
Take a walk inside St. Margaret’s Library, and the upgrades that took place over the summer are impossible to miss.

The Library had spaces reimagined and updated to increase its technological capabilities and respond to students’ learning interests. One of the more noticeable additions is a large custom video wall, a nine-screen display that can be configured in many different ways.

“It will allow us to have presentations as well as slideshows, displayed photos, announcements and any other content we may want to showcase,” said Angela Mackenzie, director of library and digital literacy. “It will be one of the premier presentation spaces on campus.”

Adjacent to the video wall, two student studio spaces were renovated and transformed into a new robotics and virtual reality lab. This will be the home base for St. Margaret’s virtual-reality electives in Middle School and Upper School, as well as the robotics and engineering concepts elective in the Middle School, the First Lego League robotics teams and the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team. It will also be available for Upper School students to collaborate, and double as a meeting space for various student leadership groups and advisories.

It was one of many upgrades scattered across campus that debuted for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition to the major renovations taking place in the Early Childhood School, several areas of St. Margaret’s campus were enhanced to keep pace with student learning.

Lower School
During the All-School Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, St. Margaret’s senior and ASB president Thomas Hughes had a specific bit of wisdom reserved for Lower School students.

“Go crazy on that new playground,” he said with a smile. “It looks awesome.”

The Lower School playground did receive a noticeable facelift this summer, as the area was resurfaced and repainted with new game graphics dotting the surface.

Additionally, the Lower School Outdoor Classroom had a few modifications based on feedback from the 2018-2019 school year. And new interactive video screens were installed in the grades 1-4 classrooms, meaning all classrooms on campus now have this technology.

Welcome Center
A new welcome center was constructed at the main entrance as a way to enhance campus safety and security efforts. Visitors arriving at St. Margaret’s during normal school hours will check with security at this center.

Tartan Store
The Tartan Store and reception area received upgrades this summer, including new floors and fresh paint.
