New Spring Film Festival Spotlights 26 Student-Created Films

Students who participated were from the Middle School’s introduction to film classes as well as Upper School intermediate and advanced film production classes taught by Karen Bennett.
Upper School and Middle School film students showcased their original creations from the 2018-2019 school year during St. Margaret’s inaugural Spring Film Festival in Hurlbut Theater.

A total of 26 short films, varying from a few seconds to more than four minutes in length, were shown at the festival. The films highlighted creative storytelling, cinematography, special effects, musical selection and editing skills that students learned in their film classes. They were filmed across St. Margaret’s campus and around San Juan Capistrano.

“The inaugural Spring Film Festival was a wonderful way to celebrate our new cinematic arts program. This robust and ambitious addition to our arts program has received a high level of interest and involvement from students in its first year, and promises to thrive and grow in the years to come,” Director of the Arts Darcy Rice said. “Karen Bennett’s skillful teaching and inspired leadership deserves all the credit for a wildly successful first year, and I am looking forward to many great films by our students in years to come.”

At the end of the night, the Audience Choice Award was presented to senior Robbie Graham for his 4-minute film “Running Towards a Dream.”

In addition to the 26 films screened in Hurlbut Theater, the audience had the opportunity to don virtual-reality viewers using their mobile phones to watch 12 short films created with a GoPro Fusion 360 camera during intermission and after the program.
