Grade 8 Students Immerse in U.S. History During Trip to Washington D.C. and Philadelphia

Students visited many historic sites, museums and memorials to gain a personal connection and understanding of their U.S. history studies.
Visiting more than 20 sites of historical relevance in Washington D.C., Virginia and Pennsylvania, St. Margaret’s grade 8 students spent a week immersed in United States history and civics during the class’s traditional end-of-year trip.

The full itinerary of activities started in Philadelphia with visits to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center. It continued with several days in Washington D.C., where students visited many historic sites, museums and memorials to gain a personal connection and understanding of their U.S. history studies.

Visits included the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Memorial, the Pentagon Memorial, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Newseum, the Library of Congress, the National Cathedral, and a half-day tour of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia.

There was also time set aside for students to honor and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. At Arlington National Cemetery, class representatives Audrey Harrington, Alexis Lindenfelser, Kaitlin Tam and Devin Thomas presented a wreath of honor and remembrance at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on behalf of the St. Margaret’s community.

Also, St. Margaret’s parent and Marine Corps colonel Christopher Gideons spoke to the students at the Marine Corps War Memorial, encouraging them to express gratitude and service and advising them to never take for granted the country they live in.

To further solidify their appreciation for veterans and the sacrifices they made, the students each researched one person whose name is engraved on the black granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial prior to leaving on the trip. They then located the name on the wall, and left something meaningful underneath it.
