St. Margaret's Lacrosse Programs Crowned Orange County Champions

The Tartans were not to be denied on the road to second consecutive championships.

The Tartans overcame a one-goal deficit at the half to defeat a tough Foothill HS team 15-11 and claim their second consecutive U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Championship. St. Margaret's dominated possession for most of the match and outscored the Knights 9-4 in the second half.

A big part of that domination was supplied by OC Final MVP Maddie Barkate. The Havard University commit won 12 draw controls and scored five goals to propel the Tartans in the win.

"We knew coming into the game Foothill would be physical and we would need to stick to our gameplan to come out on top. It is always fun to play a team like Foothill and pull out a victory," said Barkate.

Barkate was supported by University of Pennsylvania commit Niki Miles who added six goals and two assists, including the Tartans' last three goals to seal the game. Grace Karstetter (2g, 1a), Campbell Case (1g, 2a) and Jordan Miles (2a) rounded out the scoring for St. Margaret's.

The Tartans will meet up with Palos Verdes for a chance to bring home St. Margaret's third Southern Section Championship on Saturday, May 11. The game will be played at Mira Costa High School with a 10 a.m. start time.

St. Margaret's captured another Orange County Championship, beating Foothill 17-10 after successfully digging itself out of a three-goal hole early in the game. The Tartans controlled the second half, outpacing the Knights 11-4 behind the face-off prowess of OC Final MVP Stuart Pollard. The Holy Cross commit was tremendous all evening, going 29 for 31 at the x and notching an assist.

"Everyday we come out to work hard and I think it showed tonight," said Pollard. "We always try to focus on our team and our fundamentals, not what the opponent is doing."

The Tartans needed all that focus to overcome a physical Foothill squad who jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before St. Margaret's stormed back, eventually settling into a 6-6 halftime score.

St. Margaret's offense was potent as usual with freshman Cooper Barkate supplying four goals and three assists while sophomore Nate Sanchez stung the Knights with four goals and an assist. University of Utah commit Koa Todd led the Tartans on several scoring runs, winding up with four goals on the evening. Bryant University commit Kevin Groeninger added another milestone, becoming the first player in California state history to crack the 400-point mark with two goals and three assists. He now has 404 career points.

The Tartans will look to avenge last year's Southern Section title game loss to Loyola HS, drawing the Cubs again in the championship match. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Mira Costa High School on Saturday, May 11.
