The Tartans are wrapping up the regular season with an eye to beginning playoff action next week.
Boys Golf

The Tartans will enter San Joaquin League Prelims on a high note, besting Sage Hill School 191-215 on April 23 at Marbella Country Club. Seniors Michael Etchandy (35, one birdie and one bogey) and Jack Wojcik (39 with one birdie) led the team in the win, placing St. Margaret's as Co-League Champions for 2019.

St. Margaret's will compete in the league prelims on April 30 and league finals on May 1 leading into the CIF Individuals on May 6 and CIF Team Championship on May 14.

Boys Tennis

St. Margaret's is currently ranked No. 9 in CIF-SS Division II, defeating JSerra High School 12-6 on April 23. The Tartans have received solid contributions from singles competitor Jack Hanna and doubles team Jack Nolet and Grayson Dow, consistently producing three-set wins every match.

"It has been a challenging but rewarding season so far with the boys improving each week. We have tightened some things up on the court with our play and we are all looking forward to what lies in front of us in the postseason," said head coach Scott Lipsky.

Baseball

The Tartans have been on a tear, winning their last 12 and outscoring opponents 68-29. Senior Will Riddle was phenomenal in St. Margaret's last outing, a 5-0 win over Flintridge Prep, going 4-4 with a double, three RBI and six stolen bases. Pitchers Trey Pate and Solomon Banks combined pitching efforts for the shutout on April 23. United States Naval Academy commit Alex Smith leads the team in batting average (.456), on-base percentage (.600), runs (16), doubles (10) and triples (3).

The Tartans are currently unranked in CIF-SS Division V polls but are looking to make an impact in the postseason.

"To win a CIF championship in baseball there's a lot of luck involved. Being in Division V, the luck of the draw is important. The best team rarely wins a championship," said head coach Scott Wallis. "It's about being hot at the right time and which team has the right mentality and can handle the big moments. We might be that team this year and maybe Cinderella's slipper will fit us."

Swimming and Diving

St. Margaret's will be well-represented at the CIF-SS Championships on April 29 at the Riverside Aquatics Complex. Freshman Celeste Taylor will look to continue her impressive debut year after winning the league title in diving competing in an 11-dive rotation against the best divers in the region at Monday’s diving finals. Juniors Grace Zhou and Owen Young have secured their spots in the championships with automatic cuts in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle while making consideration times in 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, respectively.

Also looking to make it to the finals is junior Nate Mouchawar, who is now a .1 seconds away from breaking the school record in the 50 freestyle with his 22.69 performance from league finals on April 18. Several relay teams also have a chance returning, having achieved CIF consideration times in the girls and boys 200 freestyle relay and the girls 400 freestyle relay.

Track & Field

The Tartans put up impressive numbers at the San Joaquin League finals on April 18, posting margins of victory of 74 (boys) and 78 (girls) points while securing St. Margaret's fourth consecutive league championship.

“The athletes did an extraordinary job balancing their personal goals with the needs of the team at last week’s league championships," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "Their accountability to each other resulted in our largest number of CIF qualifiers in recent memory and we are very excited to see them compete at the next level.”

St. Margaret's will begin playoffs next Tuesday, April 30, finishing tied for 2nd place in the San Joaquin League. The team is hoping to gain some momentum as they are recovering from the injury bug that plagued them during the 2nd half of the season. Seniors Paul Boranian, Ethan Hill, Andrew Moore and Lewis Smith are four-year varsity players helping lead the charge to extend the season as long as possible.

The Tartans defeated Trabuco Hills 3-0 on April 25 and will take on Warren High School at home in the first round of the Division III playoffs on Tuesday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

The Tartans bring an 11-3 record and seven-game win streak into the postseason and look to be in top form, defeating rival Foothill High School 9-7 on April 25. St. Margaret's relied on Niki Miles' four goals and two assists while Maddie Barkate added two goals and two assists in the win.

St. Margaret's will look to repeat as Southern Section Champions as the postseason begins on Tuesday, April 30.

Boys Lacrosse

Suffering losses only to out-of-conference opponents St. Ignatius and Torrey Pines, the postseason looks to be a lock for the Tartans. St. Margaret's will look to use the momentum generated by a 16-3 drubbing of Tesoro High School as playoffs begin April 30. The Tartans were led by Koa Todd (4g, 1a), Kevin Groeninger (2g, 6a), Nate Sanchez (3g, 3a) and Steven Deck (3g). Zane Handy made nine saves in the win.
