St. Margaret’s Boys Track & Field Repeats as CIF Academic Award Team Winner

Nine Tartan athletics programs joined track & field in the top 10 rankings of CIF Southern Section Academic Awards.
St. Margaret's boy's track & field team has been named the 2018-2019 CIF Southern Section-FORD Academic Award Team Champion with a cumulative GPA of 3.87. The award is the second consecutive win for St. Margaret's, with last year's team posting a 3.775 and securing the top spot amongst track & field programs from schools with enrollments under 1,500 students.

Nine Tartan athletic teams finished among the top 10 in academic achievement, announced by the CIF Southern Section on April 16. In addition to boys track & field, St. Margaret's was well-represented by boys basketball (2), boys cross country (4), football (2), boys golf (5), girls golf (4), boys soccer (3), girls soccer (2) and girls volleyball (2).

To be considered, teams must have a minimum of five student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA average (4.0 scale) in the first semester or first two quarters of the 2018-19 school year. The highest team GPA in each sport category by enrollment determines the winner. Schools are divided into two enrollment categories, 1,500 and above and 1,499 and below. The team with the highest GPA in each enrollment category for each sport receives the award.

“Winning this award for a second consecutive year is rare, but it’s also a clear display of how committed this group is to the philosophy of truly being a student-athlete," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "Their work ethic in the classroom is identical to what they display on the track, and it’s an honor to work with them each day.”
