Alumni Share Wisdom on College and Careers at Alumni Career Forum

Offering their insight on life after St. Margaret’s, from college choices to career paths, 11 Tartan alumni returned to campus to take part in the 8th annual Alumni Career Forum last week. The alumni participated in two lively panels on the Hurlbut Theater stage in front of Upper School and Middle School students.

“We are grateful that so many alumni were eager to volunteer for their first alma mater and share their personal narrative for future alumni,” said Jillian Gray, St. Margaret’s director of alumni relations. “Our alumni have a unique perspective for current students. They were once in the very same St. Margaret’s classrooms, curious about their futures and pondering college and career paths. To provide the insight they have is so valuable to our current Tartans.”

The Upper School panel focused on college life and featured four recent St. Margaret’s graduates currently studying in college. In a discussion moderated by Ian Thomas ’09 and Georgina Lean ’09, the panel discussed choosing a college, selecting a major, picking a class schedule, transferring to new schools, and various aspects of student life.

The Middle School panel focused on careers, as alumni discussed how they carved out their career path, how it differed from their vision as St. Margaret’s students, and also shared advice for current Middle School students on their future goals.

“There was a diversity of career paths, personalities and perspectives on the panel, which allowed our students to see themselves in our alumni,” Middle School Principal Jeannine Clarke said. “A few alumni shared stories of their time as Middle School students at St. Margaret’s, which helped our students understand the relevance of the work they’re currently doing and how it can impact their future. It is so valuable for our students hear about how Tartan alumni pursued their passion and turned it into a career.”
