Tartans Victorious in Halo Classic at Angel Stadium

St. Margaret's defeated Saddleback Valley 5-2 in Anaheim on Wednesday evening.
St. Margaret's baseball program was treated to a slice of big league baseball, competing in the annual Halo Classic at Angel Stadium on Wednesday night. The Tartans, for the first time under the lights, faced off against San Juan Capistrano rival Saddleback Valley Christian, coming away with a 5-2 victory. The win evens the four-year series between the two in the Halo Classic at 2-2, with the Tartans winning in 2017 and 2019.

St. Margaret's was led by catcher Alex Smith's 4-for-4 performance, earning bases every time up, and centerfielder Will Riddle's 2-3 performance with a double, RBI and stolen base. Shortstop Roberto Gonzalez tapped a shot to deep left field for a triple, eventually scoring on an errant pitch.

Defensively, freshman second baseman Hunter Smith shone for the Tartans, with two big putouts in the third inning. Reliever Trey Pate added two strikeouts over two perfect innings, earning the save.

"A quality win for us with perfect defense and clutch pitching. Heading into Spring Break on a five-game winning streak is nice, but when we return next Friday to face Elsinore High School on the road, we start the second half of our season with an even tougher schedule than the first," said head coach Scott Wallis. "I like where we're at mentally right now, and I like our chances to make a playoff run in a tough league."
